Mandala Airline's Boeing 737-200 from Medan to Jakarta crashed on Monday 5/9/05 at around 10 am. I arrived in Polonia at 18.00 hours that day. Pictures were taken starting Tuesday because I was just too shocked and horrified by what I saw there. Charred bodies were laid out in the yard because there simply wasn't enough space in the morgue of the hospital. On Tuesday morning, the putrid smell was growing stronger, bodily fluids leaking out, and flies had started swarming the bodies. Ice blocks didn't arrive until past 30 hours after their time of death. Never imagined what airline crash victims would look like, nor on what happens to the human body when burnt by such intense heat from the blaze of the jet fuel. To see the victims at their last breath looking like they were screaming and trying to reach out for help. Family members come to find their loved ones. They tossed and turned each body looking for the slightest clue. Some tried to find rings on the fingers, but a father recognized a boy by the sock he was wearing, which didn't burn in the fire. Many brought psychics to help identify the victims. Several families, however, weren't able to find a body. Up to the last minutes before the coffins were shut, two families were fighting over a body. Hospital officials were overwhelmed. These pictures will never describe how it felt to be there. This is a simple documentation of my assignment there, until day 3.
